What do I need to be able to take payments
online and what are the options available? Well, basic online payment can be made via nothing more than a PayPal account. This is free and easy to set up, and the ongoing charges will depend on the volume of transactions made per month plus a small (currently 20p in UK currency) additional charge per transaction.

PayPal can now operate (from earlier this year - 2006) in a similar way to the kind of payment processes you are used to using so that you as a buyer from a web site do not have to create a PayPal account and charge it up in order to buy goods online.

However, there are some disadvantages to this as a merchant selling online such as the time it takes for monies to arrive in your Bank Account (it takes around 7 days to be drawn down from yout PayPal account to your Bank Account and you have to request this) and the more sympathetic approach PayPal take to disputes siding very much with the buyers of goods rather than the merchants.

More established retailers often prefer a more professional solution to integrate Internet Merchant Services into your web site. For this you will need to firstly contact your bank and ask for an Internet Merchant Number - once you have this then your website shop can be integrated with the bank and you would expect to recieve monies from clients within 3 business days into your bank account. The cost of each integration will be different depending on the individual circumstances but this is only done once and you will have to pay the bank for the application fee for a Merchant Account whether it is granted or not.
